Persona 5 is an action-packed, role-playing game developed by Atlus for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles. The game takes place in modern-day Tokyo, and follows the story of a group of teenagers who become vigilante thieves known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
Expanding on the original 2017 release, Persona 5 Royal is also available on Steam. The game not only adds a complete extra third semester at the game’s conclusion, but it also changes several aspects of the original plot, introduces a new member of the Phantom Thieves, and introduces new Personas and boss fights.
The story of Persona 5 revolves around the protagonist, a high school student who has been falsely accused of a crime and sent to live with a guardian in Tokyo. There, he discovers the existence of the Metaverse, a parallel world where distorted desires and shadows take shape as dangerous monsters. With the help of his newfound friends, the protagonist becomes the leader of the Phantom Thieves, a group of students who use their personas, powerful manifestations of their inner selves, to change the hearts of corrupted adults and make them confess their wrongdoings.
One of the standout features of Persona 5 is its unique blend of Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) elements with social simulation mechanics. Throughout the game, the player must balance their time between exploring the Metaverse and building relationships with other characters in the real world. Building these relationships not only provides the player with valuable benefits in battle, but also allows them to experience the stories and struggles of the supporting cast.
The gameplay in Persona 5 is both challenging and rewarding. The turn-based battles are fast-paced and require strategic thinking, as each enemy has its own weaknesses and strengths. The player must also manage their party’s health and resources, as well as their own persona’s abilities and weaknesses. Outside of battle, the player must manage their time wisely, deciding how to spend each day and balancing their social life with their vigilante activities.
The graphics and sound design in Persona 5 are stunning. The game features a vibrant, anime-inspired art style and a memorable soundtrack that perfectly captures the game’s tone and atmosphere. The voice acting is also top-notch, with each character’s personality shining through in their performances.
